Glentauchers
A granite distillery just outside Keith. In 1989 Allied Distillers (who later became Chivas Brothers) bought Glentauchers, with some of the whisky reserves going into Ballantine's and production restarting in 1992.
About
Glentauchers employ a lighter side make, a result of long fermentation and slow distillation. Their make always ends up to Buchanan's and Black & White, and recently Ballantine's.
History
Founded in 1897 by James Buchanan and W.P. Lowrie, Glentauchers underwent a series of mergers and rebuilds and was under the control of DCL (now Diageo) until 1989, when it was purchased by Caledonian Malt Whisky Distillers (a part of Allied Distillers, which is now owned by Pernod Ricard via their Chivas Brothers subsidiary). Also known as one of the '1890's gang'. Glentauchers is where the 'Continous pot still distillation' experiments were held.
During the early 1980s whisky demand slump, many distilleries fell out, including Glentauchers. So it was surprising Allied Distillers (one of Diageo/DCL's rivals) took the firm, and listed it as a component of Ballantine's. Production only restarted in 1992.
A handful of official bottlings are available for sale locally and via Travel Retail, but Glentauchers is a key component in Ballantine's (also usually a part of Gordon & MacPhail bottling) and the vast majority of its output is used for blending purposes, although it is also highly regarded by independent bottlers.
Glentauchers is also used by Chivas Brothers as a training centre for new employees and most of the production is manually controlled. The distillery will become Pernod Ricard's first carbon-neutral distillery by 2022 with biofuel being used to power the distillery options.
Speyside Region
Although, Speyside was not accepted as an official whisky region it is now generally approved as a subdivision of the Highlands Region. Over half of all Scotland's distilleries are located in here which makes it the most densely populated whisky region in the world. Many of the most popular single malts are produced in Speyside also the malts here are typically said to be the sweetest of all scotch whisky malts. Their whiskies are known for being frugal with peat and full of fruit. Pear, apple, vanilla, honey and spice all have a part a role in expressions from this region, which are commonly matured in sherry casks.
