FAQs

Got a question about buying, bottling, storing or selling a whisky cask? Find quick answers below, or get in touch and a real person on the team will help.

About The Single Cask

Who is The Single Cask?

We're an independent Scotch whisky bottler based in Glenrothes, Fife. We source, mature, store and bottle single cask whiskies for our own releases, for customers who want to buy a cask of their own, and for businesses who want a bespoke private label bottling.

How long have you been operating?

Since 2010. We're an established, independent bottler now with our own HMRC-approved bonded warehouse and bottling facility in Fife, not a reseller working through someone else's facility.

Where are you based, and can I visit?

Our bonded warehouse is in Glenrothes, Fife, Scotland. You're welcome to book a visit, walk the racks, and stand next to your own cask if you own one with us. Get in touch at customersupport@thesinglecask.co.uk to arrange a time.

What makes The Single Cask different from a whisky broker?

We're bottlers, not brokers. Many companies that sell casks are simply reselling stock they don't actually hold or bottle themselves. We store, bottle and label everything under one roof at our own bonded warehouse, so if you want your cask turned into bottles, that's a service we deliver directly rather than outsource.

Buying a Whisky Cask

How does buying a cask work?

Tell us your preferred region, style, or budget, and our team will get back to you personally with options. Once you've chosen a cask, we agree pricing, handle the paperwork, and your cask is stored securely in our bond under your name.

How much does a cask cost?

Prices vary by distillery, age and cask type. We quote the cask price, storage and any bottling costs upfront, with no hidden fees, before you commit to anything.

What documentation will I get?

You'll receive formal ownership documentation for your specific cask, which is held in our HMRC-approved bond. You're also welcome to arrange a sample draw to check on it yourself.

Can I buy a cask as a gift?

Yes, casks make a distinctive gift for a birthday, anniversary, or retirement. Get in touch and we'll talk you through the options and how ownership transfer works.

Is there a minimum spend?

No fixed minimum, prices vary cask to cask.

Choosing Your Cask

What's the difference between cask types (barrel, hogshead, butt, etc.)?

Cask size changes how a whisky matures. Smaller casks like barrels (190–220 litres) and hogsheads (225–250 litres) have a higher wood-to-spirit ratio, so they mature faster. Larger casks like butts (475–500 litres) mature more slowly and gradually. We stock casks across the full range, including barrels, hogsheads, quarter casks, puncheons, and butts, each with a different flavour outcome.

How many bottles will my cask produce?

It depends on the cask size and how long it's matured (evaporation, or the “angels' share,” reduces volume over time), but as a guide, a typical hogshead yields roughly 250 to 300 bottles.

I don't know much about whisky, how do I choose a cask or bottle?

That's exactly why we built our Whisky Moods system. Instead of technical jargon, we group our whiskies into five moods: Cheerful, Playful, Bold, Curious and Easy-Going, so you can pick based on the occasion or the kind of drinker you are, then explore the tasting notes from there.

Can I taste before I buy?

Yes. You can visit our Fife warehouse and sample a range of single casks in person, or we can send samples by mail if a visit isn't practical. Note that there are charges for samples to be drawn.

Bottling & Private Label

Can I bottle my cask under my own brand?

Yes, our private label service lets you choose a single cask and bottle it under your own label at our HMRC-approved warehouse in Fife, whether that's for a personal milestone, a gift, or a commercial brand.

How does the private label process work?

Four steps: tell us the number of bottles you want, your budget, and your preferred style or occasion; sample a range of casks and pick your favourite; work with our design team on your label artwork; then collect your bottles from Fife, or we can advise on delivery.

Is there a minimum order for private label bottling?

It depends on the size of the cask. We have some as small as octaves, which give around 50 to 80 bottles.

How much does private label bottling cost, and what's included?

Costs depend on the cask, bottle count, and packaging choices. Duty, VAT, labels, bottles, closures and packaging are all part of the final price, and we quote everything upfront before you commit.

How long does bottling take, from choosing a cask to receiving bottles?

Typically 2 to 4 weeks from cask selection to collection.

Storage, Security & Visiting

Where is my cask stored?

In our own HMRC-approved bonded warehouse in Glenrothes, Fife, not a third-party facility. We're members of the Bonded Warehousekeepers Association and the Scotch Whisky Association.

Is my cask insured and secure?

Every cask in our bond is racked, monitored and handled by our own warehouse team, with every movement recorded under HMRC bond conditions. Basic insurance is covered by the warehouse, though for independent cask owners it's always best to also have your own policy for extra cover.

What does storage cost?

We quote storage plainly and upfront, before you commit to anything, with no hidden fees. Please contact us for full details.

Can I visit my cask?

Yes, you're welcome to book a visit, walk the racks in Fife, and stand next to your own cask. It's one of the best ways to see exactly how and where your whisky is maturing.

Selling a Cask

I already own a cask, can I sell it through you?

Yes. Tell us about your cask (distillery, year, and any paperwork you have) and we'll verify the details, including regauging to confirm the remaining volume and strength.

How is my cask valued, and does it cost anything?

Valuation is free and no-obligation. We give you a written valuation based on the litres of pure alcohol in your cask and current market prices for that distillery, with no upfront fees.

What are my options once I have a valuation?

Sell directly to us, have your cask bottled by us instead, or simply walk away. There's no pressure at any stage.

How do I know I'm getting a fair price?

Cask owners are a common target for lowball offers, so we'd always encourage getting more than one valuation and comparing how each was calculated, not just the final number.

Trust, Legitimacy & Getting Started

How do I know The Single Cask is legitimate?

We've been trading since 2010, and we're happy to have you visit in person, see your cask, and meet the team. We'd encourage that kind of due diligence with any company you're trusting with a cask.

Do you offer investment advice?

No, we're whisky bottlers and cask specialists, not financial advisers.

How do I get started?

Drop us a line at customersupport@thesinglecask.co.uk or use the contact form on our site. Whether you want to buy a cask, sell one, get bottling under your own label, or just have a question, a real person on the team will get back to you.

I'm completely new to whisky casks, where do I even start?

Start with a conversation. Tell us roughly what you're interested in, buying, bottling, or just learning, and we'll point you to the right guide or the right person on the team.
