Lowland whisky region
The Lowlands are Scotland's gentle south — the whisky-producing area below the Highland Line, running across the central belt and down to the border. Lowland single malts are traditionally the lightest and most delicate of all Scotch whiskies: soft, grassy and floral, with notes of cut grass, honeysuckle, cereal, citrus and a clean, gentle finish. Their approachable style makes them a wonderful introduction to single malt.
The Lowland style
The region is historically associated with triple distillation, which produces a lighter, smoother spirit — Auchentoshan still triple distils to this day. Expect elegant, unpeated whiskies built on grain sweetness and floral delicacy rather than smoke or heavy sherry.
Lowland distilleries
The classic Lowland names are Auchentoshan, Glenkinchie and Bladnoch, joined in recent years by a wave of new distilleries including Kingsbarns, Daftmill, Annandale, Lindores Abbey, Clydeside, Holyrood and The Borders.
