Whisky Cask Broker vs Independent Bottler: How to Choose

Last updated 31 October 2026. Written by The Single Cask, an independent bottler with an HMRC approved bonded warehouse in Glenrothes, Fife.

A whisky cask broker arranges the sale of casks between owners and buyers and usually does not bottle anything. An independent bottler buys, matures and bottles whisky under its own labels, and can also bottle a cask for you. If you want to end up with bottles, an independent bottler with its own bonded warehouse is usually the more direct route. If you only want to trade a cask, a broker may suit you. Either way, you should check the same things before you pay.

We are an independent bottler that also sells casks, so we are not a neutral voice here. This page tells you how to judge any seller, including us.

What does a whisky cask broker do?

A broker connects people who own casks with people who want to buy them. Many brokers are honest and well established. The key point is that a broker is not always the party who stores, regauges or bottles your cask, so you need to know who is.

What does an independent bottler do?

An independent bottler selects casks from distilleries, matures them in bond, and bottles them under its own name. A bottler with a warehouse and a bottling line can store your cask, take samples, and bottle it when you are ready. At The Single Cask this all happens under one roof in Fife, and we can bottle a cask under your own label.

Questions to ask any cask seller

  1. Does the cask exist, and where is it? Ask for the warehouse keeper's confirmation, the cask number, and paperwork in your name.
  2. Can I visit and sample it? A seller with a real warehouse should be happy for you to see the cask.
  3. What will it cost in total? Ask about storage, insurance, regauging, bottling, and the duty and VAT that become due when the whisky leaves bond.
  4. How do I get out? Ask who would buy the cask or the bottles later, and on what terms.
  5. Who is the seller? Check the company, its address, how long it has traded, and whether you can speak to a named person.

Red flags

  • Guaranteed or fixed returns. Whisky cask values can fall as well as rise.
  • Pressure to decide quickly, or cold calls and unsolicited messages.
  • No way to visit, or no named warehouse and cask number.
  • Vague or missing information on fees and exit.

Whisky casks are not a regulated investment, and UK authorities have issued warnings about whisky cask investment scams, including firms that sold casks buyers never owned. Take independent advice before you commit money.
