Less Packaging, Same Whisky: Why We Are Removing the Wooden Box

Less Packaging, Same Whisky: Why We Are Removing the Wooden Box

At The Single Cask, we have always believed that what matters most is what is inside the bottle.

For many years, bottles in our Signature Series have been presented in individual wooden boxes. They look good and have become part of the presentation of the range.

But we have been asking ourselves a simple question.

Do we really need them?

Our answer is no.

That is why we have decided to remove the individual wooden boxes from our Signature Series bottles.

Going back to where we started

When The Single Cask first started as an independent bottler, we didn't use wooden presentation boxes.

We bottled great whisky, put it in a bottle and let the whisky speak for itself.

And whisky lovers still bought it.

In many ways, that is what independent bottling is all about. We bottle one cask at a time, and every cask is different. When that whisky is gone, it is gone.

Sometimes a cask may give us only a few hundred bottles, which makes every release something a little more special.

For us, that is far more exciting than the packaging.

It is about opening a bottle with friends, sharing it at a tasting and discovering something you may never get the chance to taste in exactly the same way again.

That was the idea behind The Single Cask when we started, and it is still the idea today.

Less packaging, less waste

Every wooden box requires materials, manufacturing, printing, transport and storage before it ever reaches the person drinking the whisky.

And in many cases, once the bottle has been opened, the box is simply put away or thrown out.

For us, that no longer makes sense.

By removing unnecessary packaging, we can reduce the amount of material used for every bottle we produce, reduce the space required when transporting our whisky and cut down on packaging that may ultimately become waste.

It is a small change when you look at one bottle.

Across hundreds and thousands of bottles, it starts to make a much bigger difference.

We would rather put the focus on the whisky

The wooden box has never made the whisky taste better.

The character comes from the spirit, the distillery, the cask and the years spent maturing in Scotland.

That is where we believe the attention should be.

Our Signature Series will continue to represent what The Single Cask has always been about. Carefully selected individual casks, each with its own character and its own story.

No two casks are exactly the same.

That individuality is what makes single cask whisky so interesting.

We are simply removing something we no longer believe is necessary.

Sustainability does not need to be complicated

There is no single change that solves every environmental problem.

But businesses can look at what they use, question what is actually needed and make sensible changes wherever they can.

For us, removing the wooden presentation box is one of those decisions.

Less wood.

Less packaging.

Less weight and space being transported around the world.

Less waste at the end.

And the same whisky inside the bottle.

The Signature Series is not changing

The whisky is not changing.

Our approach to selecting casks is not changing.

And the small-batch nature of what we do is certainly not changing.

Each Signature Series release will still come from an individual cask, bottled in limited numbers and chosen because we think the whisky deserves to be shared.

What is changing is the way we think about presentation.

We want our packaging to be simple, practical and appropriate for the product, without adding materials simply because that is how whisky has traditionally been presented.

A great bottle of whisky should be able to stand on its own.

A small step in the right direction

We know removing a wooden box is only one step.

But sustainability is often about making lots of sensible decisions rather than making one big claim.

As The Single Cask continues to grow, we will keep looking at the way we bottle, pack, store and transport our whisky and see where we can make improvements.

In some ways, this decision takes us back to where we started.

One cask. One unique whisky. A limited number of bottles. No unnecessary packaging.

Because ultimately, the bottle is there to be opened, shared and enjoyed.

Less packaging. Same whisky. More focus on what really matters.
